Cellulite Information and Treatments
Cellulite is the term used to describe the visible effect on the epidermis of excess fat deposits being stored just below its surface. Everybody knows what cellulite looks like because it's so easily recognizable. It has a unique pattern and it generally appears on the hips, the abdomen, or the upper thighs and buttocks.
Cellulite is unsightly, embarrassing, and will never be given a compliment. Cellulite is controllable but at the same time not necessarily preventable. Not an easy answer to take in, but cellulite is preventable only as long as there's a high level of effort to implement dietary changes resulting in an overall lifestyle change.
Cellulite is found at an astounding higher percentage in women than in men. It is not believed to be a medical condition but is known to vary in its severity from one individual to the next.
Causes of cellulite
Cellulite doesn't generally become an issue until the years leading up to puberty. During these years, hormone levels surge and those hormones initiate the various changes that occur as a result of adolescence. One of these changes involves the formation of a layer of fat within the innermost layer of skin called the subcutaneous fat layer.
The purpose of this layer of skin is to contain stored fat. It does so with a particular pattern. It is this pattern, or framework for fat storage, shaped somewhat like the letter 'X' that creates the dimpling effect. When too much fat is stored and the fat deposits begin to bulge, cellulite becomes visible. The pattern that is created is different in a woman's body than in a man's body. The shape formed at this layer is more like a column. Therefore, even when there is excess fat being stored, causing cellulite, it is usually not visible in the same manner.
When there is enough space for all the fat deposits, no dimpling occurs. The trick then becomes to only store enough fat that your body frame is capable of handling. Every woman has the tendency to develop cellulite as there are times, pregnancy being a primary one, when fat begins to accumulate for specific reasons.
How to treat cellulite
The only way cellulite will be less noticeable is by shrinking the size of the fat cells stored in the subcutaneous layer so they no longer bulge. This can only be accomplished by lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise. When we say diet we mean generaly as in the eating habits, not as in a crash diet. Crash diets only cause the body to ultimately feel starved which could cause it to store more fat and add to the issue at hand.
Other options include moving to a colder climate and wearing long pants around the clock. There are always a number of pore constricting lotions you can apply to try to mask the cellulite temporarily. We only include these to re-emphasize the point that there is one and only way to naturally remove cellulite. It is difficult to remove every occurrence, but you will remain healthy trying!
And contrary to what the marketers of these hundreds of cellulite treatment creams, lotions, wraps, pills and other procedures will tell you, a sensible diet that's heavy on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and low in sodium and saturated fat will put you on the road to recovery. Combine moderate, regular exercise with the nutritious diet and do exercises that focus on the areas where cellulite appears like walking or biking. In a few months (or longer, depending on the severity of the cellulite) this embarrassing skin problem should be well under control.
Keep in mind that core (the area between the ribs and thighs) training work the entire body and will help burn calories, resulting in less fat on the body. Massage may also help reduce cellulite because the concentrated motion surrounding the larger muscles groups help break down the stored fat deposits. A routine of regular exercise and regular massage will keep you fit, relaxed and hopefully on the road to less cellulite.
For extreme cases there are cosmetic procedures that can help, but we don't recommend those in this forum.
