Natural Ingredients or Synthetic for Skin Care
Which are Better for Your Skin? Natural Ingredients or Synthetic?
When it comes to selecting natural skin care products versus sythetically produced skin care products, the right choice might surprise you. The debate will always exist to whether skin care products containing all natural ingredients are really better than those containing synthetic ingredients. It is the consumer who must weed through the numerous unfounded marketing promises and supposed 'guaranteed' results.
Are skin care products with natural ingredients better?
Skin care product manufacturers and distributors spend millions of dollars in research every year. They attempt to analyze every plant for that next miracle leaf that slows the aging process. Sometimes comparing it to expensive and intrusive cosmetic surgery. Using every avenue to gain a competitive edge, and increase profits of their newest skin care line, no stone is left unturned to discover the wonder root.
Manufacturers of skin care products pay marketers top dollar, to construct attention-grabbing packaging and testimonials from 'experts'. The consumers reimburse this extensive research by purchasing expensive cleansers, moisturizers, shampoos, masks, exfoliants and a variety of other cosmetics that claim to work miracles on your skin, safely, and naturally.
If all of this research has been done, are the claims true?
The government has not yet defined the guidelines and regulations surrounding the proper and authorized use of the crucial word, 'natural'. Therefore the word can be utilized in any of its many contexts. It is then left up to intepretation of the desiring consumer as to whether it means all natural ingredients are being used in their skin care products or the process to manufacture the product is 100% natural.
Although a skin care product might very well contain natural products, such as aloe or vitamin E, is the process used to extract these components using synthetic materials? Once natural ingredients are extracted, they're usually combined with synthetic products such as preservatives and stabilizing agents that help prolong shelf life.
Does this mean the product isn't good for me?
Maybe to the contrary! One of the biggest risks involved with using all natural ingredients is the potential for an allergic reaction. There really isn't a way to inclusively research every genetic possibility against the reaction to exposure from every ingredient. Lots of people have food allergies, so putting products containing plants or plant extracts on their skin may increase the risks of an allergic reaction. And even if a full-blown allergic reaction doesn't occur, natural ingredients often cause skin irritation and/or sensitivity.
And when do you normally find out you have an allergic reaction? Usually only after having reaction and going to the doctor to identify what it could be. Using skin care products with all natural ingredients found all around the world, add to the complexity in trying to determine what the cause could be.
Focus more of your attention on putting natural ingredients into your mouth and not onto your skin. One thing everyone can agree on is that eating a diet loaded with antioxidants and vitamins is extremely beneficial to healthy skin. The body is very efficient at processing natural foods and using the blood stream to transport these nutrients to the skin.
You may also find a product line you can support because of their research and testing practices. Keep in mind many companies spend millions to this is where the real work is done. Many companies utilize animal testing, for example, as their control group prior to marketing to small human test groups. If this is something you feel strongly against, choose your products accordingly.
It isn't all black and white when supporting natural products versus synthetic products. Find a skin care product line you trust and that works well with your skin type. Then become a loyal customer of that product line occassionally monitoring for any changes in ingredients. Your skin will be happier as a result.
