Skin Care for Men
Men's skin care has finally made its way to the main stream skin care product lines. Men are finally realizing that maintaining healthy skin is not just a woman's job anymore. Men are also required to keep a young, fresh look in a highly competitive work force and to simply ward off the signs of aging. Men of all ages and all walks of life are starting to care about using the right types of products for their skin type.
Men's skin differs from women's in that it contains a higher percentage of collagen and elastin, so it's thicker. Men's sebaceous glands also work harder than a woman's meaning that men's skin generally is oilier.
Real men are concerned with skin care
20 years ago men would have been considered feminine if they were caught at a spa. 10 years ago, they were simply deemed 'metro-sexual'. Today, it just makes sense to take care of yourself in an attempt to look and feel younger. Away from the days where men were expected to look scruffy as they arrived back from rounding up the cattle, men are now expected to look the part at their son's or daughter's PTA meeting.
Besides all of the regular enemies of skin like the sun, poor diet and cold weather, men's skin needs additional protection from items like the razor blade. Daily removal of facial hair and other man-related activities put the skin to the test in areas that are very visible. Therefore, additional steps need to be taken beyond the normal skin care regime as it relates to everyone.
For starters, if you want to avoid having your appearance referred to as 'weather beaten' you had better start protecting your skin from the sun. Unless you are searching out the premature aging look, sunscreen should be your friend. Remember to keep with you and apply sunscreen when you're outdoors golfing, fishing, working or playing.
Skin care Guidelines for Men
Begin the day by deep-cleaning your face to remove dirt and sweat. Cleanse again before going to bed.
Exfoliate to remove dead skin cells and other pore-blocking grime. Exfoliating also will open your pores and that's going to ensure a closer shave. Don't over do it! If you skin appears red and irritated for more than just a few minutes, you may be rubbing too aggressively. Remember the skin is already dead, you just want to remove it from the body either with an exfoliating soap or washcloth.
Before shaving, splash your face with warm water or schedule your shave after a morning shower. The warmed skin will make it easier to work up a good lather and it will soften skin. Take a few extra moments to really massage in the shaving cream. The massaging action will help stimulate blood flow in the dermis. Never use a dull blade to shave. And to ensure a close shave, always shave in the same direction as hair growth. Shaving in the opposite direction or shaving in both directions can leave you with skin that's red and irritated. Afterwards, apply vitamin-rich shaving gel to protect skin from rashes and burns that sometimes result from shaving.
Moisturizing is important to help skin seal in moisture. Many shaving products dry skin, especially if they contain alochol. Choose moisturizing products that also condition skin such as those that contain vitamins or aloe vera.
Remember that your face isn't the only part of your body that's covered with skin. Keep all skin clean and moist, especially on your feet, elbows, arms and your hands. Soft hands are kinder to the ones you touch!
When working in the yard wear protective gear such as work gloves. When done, take a quick shower to remove the dirt and sweat whenever possible.
And finally, live the good life. Eat right, exercise moderately, don't smoke, and limit your intake of alcoholic beverages, all of which help keep skin healthy. That's the part of men's skin care you don't often hear much about.
